Susunia Pahar

Susunia Pahar, located in the Bankura district (neighboring Purulia), is a hill of immense geological and historical significance, rising to an altitude of approximately 440 meters (1,440 feet). It is part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau and is significantly older than the Himalayas. Historically, the hill is famous for the Susunia Inscription, which dates back to the 4th century AD. This rock-cut inscription, belonging to King Chandravarman, is one of the oldest in West Bengal and features a “Chakra” (wheel), signifying the king’s victory and his devotion to Lord Vishnu. The hill is also an archeological goldmine; fossil remains of prehistoric animals like lions, elephants, and hyenas have been discovered here, alongside Stone Age tools, making it a site of great interest for paleontologists.

The flora and fauna of Susunia Pahar thrive in its tropical dry deciduous environment. The hillside is densely covered with medicinal plants and trees such as Sal, Segun (Teak), Palash, and Arjun. Local healers often visit the hill for its rich variety of rare herbs. The fauna includes small mammals like foxes, golden jackals, and hares, while the rocky terrain provides a perfect habitat for various reptiles. The area is particularly noted for its butterfly diversity and is a haven for birds like the Indian Pitta, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, and the Crested Serpent Eagle. A natural spring, known as Dhara, gushes out from a stone-carved lion’s mouth at the base, providing mineral-rich water that flows year-round.

Activities around Susunia Pahar cater to trekkers, pilgrims, and art lovers alike:

Rock Climbing and Trekking: Susunia is considered the “cradle” of rock climbing in West Bengal. Numerous mountaineering clubs hold training camps here due to its diverse rock faces. The trek to the summit is relatively easy and offers a sweeping view of the surrounding forest and villages.

Visit the Stone Inscription: History buffs can visit the protected site of the 4th-century inscription located on the hill’s eastern face.

Stone Carving Village: At the foothills lies a village of master craftsmen. Susunia is famous for its stone carving industry, where artisans create intricate idols and household items from “pahar” stone. Watching them work is a highlight for many visitors.

Spiritual Rest: The Dhara (Natural Spring) is a central gathering point where visitors drink the cold, refreshing water, believed to have medicinal properties, before visiting the nearby small temples dedicated to local deities.
