Kashipur Panchakot Rajbari
The Kashipur Rajbari (Palace) serves as the historical successor to the ruins of Garpanchakot. Its history began around 1750 AD when the Panchakot royal family was forced to abandon their fort at the foothills of Panchet Hill following the devastating Bargi (Maratha) invasions. Seeking a more secure location, the family shifted their seat to Kashipur. The present grand palace, however, is a more recent architectural marvel; it was largely rebuilt in 1916 by Maharaja Jyoti Prasad Singh Deo, the 67th king of the dynasty. Interestingly, the palace was constructed using specialized masons brought from China, and the project took nearly 12 years to complete. The architecture is a unique blend of colonial and traditional styles, featuring expansive courtyards, high ceilings, and intricate stonework.
Activities around Kashipur Rajbari offer a blend of heritage exploration and local culture:
Heritage Walk: Visitors can explore the sprawling palace grounds, which house the main residential wing, the Durbar Hall, and the old stable area. While some parts are in a state of decay, they offer a nostalgic glimpse into the era of the Raj.
Spiritual Visit: The palace complex is home to a significant Maa Durga Temple. During Durga Puja, the palace comes alive with traditional rituals. The Puja here is unique as it follows the Shoroshi (16-day) ritual instead of the standard four days, and the royal family members still participate in the festivities.
Photography: The weathered walls, old rusty jeeps on the premises, and the “hauntingly beautiful” corridors make it a favorite spot for architectural and vintage photography.
Nearby Nature Spots: Close to the Rajbari lies the Rakab Forest, which was historically the royal hunting ground. Today, it is a quiet spot for nature walks and birdwatching.
Cultural Immersion: The surrounding village of Kashipur allows visitors to witness local handicrafts and traditional Purulia lifestyle, often centered around the rhythmic beats of the Madal (drum) during local festivals like Rohini Utsav.
